6.박해와 격려 (2005 10월 10일, 월)

중동의 그리스도인

중동에는 일부 나라들이 민주주의를 향한 걸음을 내 딛은 것 등 많은 좋은 일들이 일어나고 있다. 박해와 위험에도 불구하고 수천명의 이란이들이 그리스도께로 돌아오고 있다. 하나님의 불빛을 끄려는 노력들이 있음에도 불구하고 하나님의 불빛이 아직도 비추고 있다. 수백만의 그리스도인은 중동에 거주하고 있다(이집트, 레바논과 팔레스타인의 콥틱, 이란인 새로운 개종자, 걸프만과 사우디 아라비아의 아시안 노동자들 등). 지난 20년간의 박해와 차별로 인해 수천 수만의 그리스도인들이 중동을 떠나고 있다(교회를 불지르며, 납치, 살해 및 테러). 많은 Chaldo-Assyrians 과 다른 그리스도인이 요르단과 시리아 혹은 다른 곳에 안식처를 구하고 있다(Chaldo-Assyrian 그리스도인은 예수님이 사용하셨던 아람어(Aramaic) 를 사용하고 있다). 한가지 긍정적인 것은 이라크 정부와 Grand Ayatollah Sistani 가 그리스도인을 공격하지 않겠다고 발표했다.

최근 몇 해동안 중동에서의 격려가 되는 소식은 무엇보다 기독교 위성방송인 SAT-7 (www.sat7.org) 이 개국한 것이다. 이 위성방송은 중동과 북 아프리카의 그리스도인과 교회에 하나님을 더 알아가는 커다란 도움을 주었으며, TV를 통한 교육과 함께 교회 밖을 향한 아주 세심한 복음전파가 이루어 졌다. 정치와 연관이 없는 이 위성방송 SAT-7 은 모든 그리스도인의 신앙에 큰 영향을 끼치고 있으며, 다른 교단, 민족, 종교를 향한 비판은 피하고 있다. 물론 이 방송이 전적으로 무슬림의 기독교 개종에 목표를 두고 있지는 않지만 비 그리스도인이 기독교, 교회 그리고 그리스도를 걱정하는 등의 부정적인 고정관념을 없애고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 SAT-7 은 무슬림과 그리스도인간의 이해를 돕고 있으며, 또한 무슬림의 그리스도인 믿음에 대한 주장을 제지 않고 있다.

아래에 SAT-7 시청자의 편지를 소개한다.

  • "SAT-7 는 특별히 우리와 같이 교회도 없고, 설교해 주는 사람도 없으며, 교회의 활동도 없는 곳에 사는 사람들에게는 우리의 영적인 삶 속에 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 나는 좋고 다양한 프로그램을 방송해 주었으면 한다." (사우디 아라비아에 살고 있는 이집트 여인).

  • "현재 칭찬, 사랑 그리고 기쁨에 대한 말씀 시간이 충분하지 않다. 우리는 항상 SAT-7 프로그램을 시청한다." (팔레스타인으로부터 3명의 어린이들).

  • "사랑, 평화 그리고 믿음을 더해주는 아주 좋은 프로그램에 감사를 전합니다. 내 가족들과 나는 매일 TV 앞에 앉아 SAT-7 프로그램을 시청하며, 함께 기도합니다." (이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 한 남자)

기 도 제 목

  • 중동에 있는 그리스도인들에게 사랑과 격려 그리고 인내가 함께 하길 위해서 기도하자. (디모데후서 1장7-10절, 사도행전 4장29-31절, 마태복음 5장11-12절, 44절)

  • 많은 중동의 그리스도인들은 무슬림 이웃들로부터 다양한 불의를 당한다. 그들이 전적으로 하나님을 의지하며, 그분의 성실하심을 신뢰하도록 기도하자. (롬 12장21절, 마태복음 5장16절, 히브리서 6장10절)

  • SAT-7 이 중동의 그리스도인을 격려하며, 교화하는 면에서 지속적인 성공을 위해서 기도하며, 그들을 돕고 그리스도의 증인이 되는 방송이 되도록 기도하자. SAT-7 의 직원과 협력단체들이 생명을 전하는 프로그램을 만들어 가도록 기도하자. SAT-7 은 재정적인 이유로 현재 24시간 매일 3시간 씩 복음방송을 전송하고 있다. 따라서 SAT-7 의 재정이 증가되길 위해서 기도하자.

Christians in the Middle East

There are plenty of good things happening in the Middle East. Steps have been taken toward democratic reforms in some countries. Thousands of Iranians are turning to Christ despite persecution and danger. The light of God is still shining, even if there are efforts to extinguish it. Millions of Christians continue to live in the Middle East (Copts in Egypt, Lebanese and Palestinians, plus new Iranian converts and Asian guest workers in the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia). Yet tens of thousands of Christians have fled the Middle East because of persecution or discrimination during the past 20 years (especially Palestinians, Lebanese, Iranians and Iraqis). Recently, Iraq has seen significant violence against Christians (burning of church buildings, kidnappings, murder and other terrorist acts), forcing many of Iraq’s Chaldo-Assyrians and other Christians to seek refuge in Jordan and Syria or elsewhere. (The Chaldo-Assyrian Christians speak Aramaic — the language spoken by Jesus). On a positive note, the Iraqi government and the Grand Ayatollah Sistani have denounced the attacks against Christians.

A major source of encouragement for Middle-Eastern Christians in recent years has been the satellite broadcasts of a television network called SAT-7 (www.sat7.org). This network provides the churches and Christians of the Middle East and North Africa with an opportunity to know Christ better through inspirational, informative, and educational television services, as well as a platform for a sensitive witness to all those outside the Church. The non-political programming of SAT-7 seeks to reflect all Christian belief and practice and avoids criticism of other denominations and ethnic and other religious groups. The broadcasts are not overtly seeking to convert Muslims to Christianity, but they do aim to dispel negative stereotypes that non-Christians have concerning Christians, the Church and Christ. In that sense, SAT-7 is bringing increased understanding between Muslims and Christians, and allowing Muslims to arrive at informed judgments about the Christian faith.

  • “Words are not enough to describe the admiration, love, and joy we have from watching SAT-7 programmes.” (three children from Palestine)

  • “Thank you very much for these excellent programmes which fill us with joy, peace, and faith. My family, and I gather daily around the TV to watch these programmes and pray for you.” (a man from Israel/Palestine)

Prayer points

  • Pray for love, courage and perseverance for the Middle-Eastern Christians (2 Tim 1:7-10; Acts 4:29-31; Matt 5:11-12, 44).

  • Most Middle-Eastern Christians have suffered various injustices from their Muslim neighbours. Pray that they can fully place their confidence in God and his faithfulness. (Rom 12:21; Matt 5:16; Heb 6:10)

  • Pray for the continued success of SAT-7 as a means of encouraging and edifying Christians in the Middle East and helping them in their life and witness for Christ.. Pray that the staff and collaborators will continue to produce life-giving programmes. SAT-7 needs increased funding to offer additional programming (currently limited to about three hours per day of new output for its 24-hour broadcast service): please pray for increased funding.
